Artist/ music video ideas

Original Artist- Halsey (Capitol Records)

New artist- Nessa

Genre- Pop/ Electropop/ synth pop/ R&B

Summary of the artist- The artist is 17 years old young woman. This is her second released song from her first record album, with this song she expresses her everyday experiences with the BPD. She has moved to England in the age of 10, her high school years have been hard for her (dealing with anxiety and leading to bpd disorder). She has gone through so many things regarding her young age. Her love for music started when she was 4 years old. She shares how she used to dance and sing all the time, everywhere. Her first serious approach with music was during her early school years- appearing on school concerts, events and etc. When she was 13, the anxiety states started to appear, making her more distant with her love for music. Eventually with the help of psychologist, she stepped up and decided to publish music covers on You Tube, a producer liked her voice and signed with Capitol Record. Nessa's demographic audience is 16-25, with her songs she expresses various of topics (mental health, the struggles of young people etc), which links to the target audience.

Similar artists- Halsey (org.)/ Troye Sivan (Capitol Record)/ Lorde/ Melanie Martinez

Released by the same producer/ similar in genre

Song- Gasoline (doesn't have an official music video)

Narrative/ performance ideas for the video- The song itself is about the artist dealing with her bipolar disorder in relation to her music career and success. In my music video the artist will express the states of the borderline personality disorder, which is similar to the original topic. Some of the symptoms of BPD include being emotionally unstable, having upsetting thought and acting without thinking. Extreme highs- when she is with her friends, super hyped and energetic, drinking and etc. Extreme lows- when she doesn't want to go out, prisoned in her house, long crying episodes and low self esteem. The music video will be related to the original song's meanings/ lyrics and bring awareness regarding mental disorders.

-The music video might include flashback scenes from the artist's past which had effect over her mental state. The cause of BPD is unclear but it's often linked to traumatic events during childhood, such as neglect or abuse.

Ideas for use of genre conventions- Halsey's music videos often include narrative stories, which relate to the songs' lyrics. For my music video, the scenes will be directly related to the lyrics. For example "Low on self-esteem, so you run on gasoline."- during this line the artist will be shown how she feels insecure about herself, (watching in the mirror and touching her face). The flow of the music video (the scenes order/ camera speeds, angles etc) will be synchronic to the song's melody/ rhythm.

Ideas for use of technical codes in the video- When the artist is in her happier states, the lighting will be brighter, using warm colour schemes, the locations will be mostly outside, when its sunny to express the warmth/ happiness and motivation that the artist experience. The camera shots will include all of her friends, hanging out together/ having fun. They will be filmed mainly in mid shots and close ups, in this way the audience can feel closer to the artist and the atmosphere. For the sad/ darker state, the colour schemes will include cool tons- blue/ grey. The artist will be mainly filmed indoors- in her room. The scenes can be slowed down to create this almost like hallucination effect. During this state, the artist will be filmed mostly in close up shots, which will create stronger emotive language with the audience- blank stares in the wall/ crumbling in her bed.

Music sources- Spotify/ Apple Music/ You Tube/ artist's official website (cds/ album). The target audience is people between age of 16-25, it's more likely for them to buy or listen to the artist's song through the streaming websites, because is more convenient. The audience can purchase the physical album, mainly for the music and the album's concept- photo book with artist's special photoshoot/ poster and a signed card. Through You Tube, artist's audience and supporters can watch and stream to the music video- more views/more money. In one or other way, by watching the video, listeners help the artist to promote and earn more money. Streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify make money from subscription fees and advertising. They make deals with record labels to get access to songs.
