Paper 1- Beyonce MV analysis

Music Video- Halo

Style of video  Is the video primarily focused on the artist's performance or a storytelling narrative ?

  • The music video is mainly focused on the narrative story, Beyonce expresses her love towards her husband, the video shows the audiences moments where they are together. There are many close shots, suggesting whole their relationship is strong. They are some scenes in the music video where Beyonce dances and practices, and her husband watches her gracefully. It shows how he supports her and cares about her wellbeing, by making sure is okay. The main message in this song is how angelic is her husband for her.
  • “Everywhere I'm looking now

I'm surrounded by your embrace

Baby, I can see your halo

You know you're my saving grace”

 Star Persona

Which elements of Beyonce's personality and persona does the video focus on and highlight ? Romantic partner, independent woman , social activist ,  sex object , glamorous and aspirational role model ?

  • The Halo music video highlights Beyonce as a romantic partner who views her husband as a saviour and angel. Through out the song she expresses her gratitudes that he is with her and what a big part he plays in her life.

Themes  and issues  explored in the song and video  e.g politics, relationships , ambition , love and  commitment

  • The main themes in this music video are relationships and love and commitment. In ‘Halo’ Beyonce sings how she ready to do anything for her partner- ‘Every rule I had you break it, It’s the risk that I'm taking, I ain't never gonna shut you out’. This shows how she is okay to takes risks and brakes her own rules or values for him.
  • Beyonce says how she is addicted to him, ‘You're the only one that I want, I think I’m addicted to your light’. This suggests how he is like a light for her and helps her to see in the dark. There are many lyrics in the song like this one, where Bey expresses her love towards her husband and notes how he saved her from the dark moments like an angel.

Representation of gender and ethnicity in the video e.g stereotypes, contrasts, social status etc.

  • The music video consists only of Beyonce and her husband, who is not her real life partner. He is part of the black community. The music video and the song itself doesn’t have or intentionally expresses any ethnical or social status messages/ themes.
  • But one thing that challenges the stereotypes are the roles of Beyonce and her husband in the music video. He plays are a secondary role of supporting her and being out of the spotlight. In the music industry or in society in general, women are the one who are supposed to support and help their husbands, behind the scenes. For example if a man has a hard day at work, his wife helps him to calm down and go through the problem. In Halo, Beyonce is the one who keeps practicing for her stage performances and her husband is the one who is worried about her overworking.

Technical codes to support your points e.g costume, performance, body language, lighting and colour, camera angles and shot types, pace of editing  etc.

- The colours in the music video are mainly white and nude, which have connotations of innocence, pureness and kindness. This linked to the song title itself ‘Halo’, which suggests angel.
