Nordic Noir

Description: Nordic Noir (Scandinavian Noir), is a genre of crime fiction usually written from a police point of view and set in Scandinavia or Nordic countries. Plain language avoiding metaphor and set in bleak landscapes results in a dark and morally complex mood, depicting a tension between the apparently still and bland social surface and the murder, misogyny, rape, and racism it depicts as lying underneath.  Origins : There are different views on the origins but most commentators agree that the genre had become well established as a literary genre by the 1990s; Swedish writer Henning Mankell, who has sometimes been referred to as "the father of Nordic Noir", notes that the Martin Beck series of novels by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo "broke with the previous trends in crime fiction" and pioneered a new style: "They were influenced and inspired by the American writer Ed McBain. They realised that there was a huge unexplored territory in which crime novels cou

Life on Mars

Genre- Hybrid genre> Crime and Sci-fi Genre- crime and sci-fi  Conventions- murders/ arresting/ investigation  Unconventional- time traveling Life on Mars has a very strong regional branding, a lots of people and places from Manchester and other northern parts of the country. The characters, style and setting reflects the location and the time its set- 1970s. Examples would be the vintage cars and costumes, technology is still new (no telephones, restricted tv times etc). The series have two genres combined together, which gives the opportunity to attract more audiences with different interest. This links to Neale's genre theory, which suggests that genres change, develop and vary as they borrow from and overlap with another. The crime genre elements are there- murders, police, investigations etc, we can see sci-fi genre elements too- time traveling. Halsey Gasoline- analysis

- Halsey (Capitol Record) is an artist that links to my initial aesthetic and style of music video. The song that will be included in my final product is 'Gasoline' by Halsey.  “Gasoline” is amongst the most-profound of Halsey’s tracks  with the issue of a mental condition she has, bipolar disorder, in relation to her success in the music industry. The verses are mostly dedicated to her questioning whether the listener is “deranged like” her. However, she also uses them to point out some of the realities of being a recognsiable face. The choruses expound on this idea, as they point out she is “part of a machine”. And the result is she is no longer “a human being”. As such, even though she has deep personal issues, there does not appear to be time or even interest in resolving them.    Most of Halsey's music videos have similar colour schemes in sets and editing. The videos have narrative story, together with visually beautiful props and locations, linked to the narrative an

Producer Research

Atlantic Records  Brief history: - Atlantic Records was founded in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, both avid music fans and record enthusiasts. Their passion for artist development made Atlantic Records the home of choice for legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Cher, Genesis, Cream and many more. Atlantic Records  set out to bring the sounds of black musicians, most notably rhythm and blues, jazz, and early rock and roll, to a wider audience.   Tom Dowd  helped keep Atlantic on the cutting edge of technology, beginning with his push to record music in stereo, as opposed with only one microphone. Also of note is the role that  Jerry Wexler  played for the firm, keeping the label at the front of many artists' minds through his publicity work. Atlantic also formed strategic partnerships with other companies, most notably  Stax Records . This allowed Atlantic access to many emerging stars, of whom Aretha F
